Will I hurt myself doing Pilates?

Last week I celebrated 12 years of being a Pilates teacher, and what an amazing 12 years it has been! I am privileged to teach thousands of people, all different shapes, sizes & ages, my current most senior client is 92 years young! It has been my joy to witness Pilates changing lives. It has rehabilitated post surgery & injury, it has reduced back pain, neck pain and improved the posture of many clients. Pilates has often been the first step to embracing a more active lifestyle. The TWO things I have heard repeatedly are:

  1. I wish I had started Pilates earlier!

  2. I am afraid I am going to hurt myself!

If you started Pilates because you were in pain or have a history of being injured and in pain, then that is a logical way of thinking. There are a few things to bear in mind here, if you have sharp pain especially back pain and this is a new issue, it might even be waking you up at night and impacting upon your daily life, I recommend you seek medical advice first, it is quite possible once you get a medical diagnosis that Pilates will be recommended to you. If you have aches, pains, & stiffness but this is at a general level and fairly normal to you, then Pilates is going to help you strengthen and align your body, increasing your flexibility & making you feel less stiff. Consistent Pilates practice will be of benefit to you. Pilates is a brilliant way of strengthening your body & improving mobility. You don't have to exercise for an hour a day, I offer workouts of varying time scales, the shortest is a '5' minute neck and upper body stretch which can be performed at your desk. The most common workout injury is not Pilates related, it is people dropping weights on themselves or falling over gym equipment.

If you are ready to get started doing Pilates or maybe you would like to get back on the mat after a break from Pilates ?

Let's have a chat about how you can get back to being the best version of you!

See you on the mat.
